The Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a baby boy. The baby, weighing 8lb 6oz, was delivered at 16:24 BST at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington. Prince William was present at the birth.
The birth was announced on social networking sites, Facebook and Twitter, with an official statement explaining that both mother and baby are doing well.
In accordance with tradition, the official bulletin containing the birth announcement will now be displayed on an ornate easel in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace. Crowds have gathered to see the bulletin and celebrate the arrival of the new heir. The baby is the third in line to the throne.
The families of both Kate and William have been informed of the news, and are said to be “delighted”. The Prince of Wales said he was “enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time”.
UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, tweeted, “I’m delighted for the Duke and Duchess now their son has been born. The whole country will celebrate. They’ll make wonderful parents.”
Ed Miliband, leader of the Labour Party, tweeted to say, “Many congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. I wish them and their son all happiness and good health.”
Kate and William arrived at the hospital early this morning while Kate was in the early stages of labour. The press, who have been camped outside St Mary’s Hospital for over a week, were soon joined by members of the public keen to welcome the Royal baby.
The new baby’s name has not yet been announced, but it is customary for Royals to have at least three first names. William’s full name is William Arthur Philip Louis. It is likely that some of the names may reflect family or historical ties. James and George to be two names likely to be considered, while many people feel Arthur may also be included.
When William was born, his name was not announced until a week after the birth. Those hoping to discover His Royal Highness the Prince of Cambridge’s name tomorrow may be disappointed.
The press release from Kensington Palace states that Kate and the baby will be staying in hospital overnight. The first glimpse of the Royal baby should be tomorrow as Kate and William take him home from the hospital. The media and crowds of the public are expected to wait outside the hospital to welcome the newborn tomorrow.
